Learning : Reading
STRATEGY: Reading

If you are finding that you are not accomplishing all of your reading, or that the reading you do seems to not be sinking in; you should try active reading.
There are 5 different tactics to use for active reading. Some will work better for you than others. Try them out, and stick with the one(s) that make you feel the most confident.

5 Tactics for Active Reading:
    1) Three-Color Highlighting
    2) Bookmark or page tabs
    3) Margin Notes
    4) Summary Writing
    5) Reading Notes

The method that you use will also depend on what kind of reading you have assigned. Here is a visual scale to gauge your necessary reading tactics.

You only need to have read the assigned reading.
Use tactics 1 or 2.

You have to discuss the reading in class.
Use tactics 1 and 2.

You have to write a paper about the reading.
Use tactics 1,2,3,4, and 5.

Using tactics 4 and 5 are time consuming, but they are a worthwhile investment when it comes to writing a paper using the readings.
